When she came back she told me about this and she handled the situation herself with incredible bravery, I have to say that. I had never felt this feeling before, which was a primal urge to lash out. Because our murder conviction laws are too lenient. The answer is not to lessen penalties for other crimes because they are more serious than murder.

Depending on the circumstances and the state, murder conviction can include life incarceration without the possibility of parole and, thankfully this is on the wane in most states, the death penalty. What on Earth do you think would not be too lenient? Recreating the end of " I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream? Research, articles, and studies show how overwhelmingly superior the Scandinavian system of punitive rehabilitation is in regards to recidivism, quality of life, and so forth, but nope!

Gotta punish those bad evil wicked people! I mostly agree. I'd also say that in some cases there are crimes so terrible there is no redemption.

Well, you killed someone, so some eye for an eye seems to make sense. Since you could be innocent, I disagree passionately with the death penalty. Depending on the circumstances of that murder and if you could be rehabilitated, I don't think mandatory life imprisonment makes sense at all. I do think the option should be available as there are some people so evil and so far gone that could not be rehabilitated or that it would be an injustice to rehabilitate them. But on the whole I think the focus should be to figure out why a person committed a crime and try to solve that underlying issue, not punishment.

Was someone stealing because they grew up in a bad area, were given no chances and it was a 20hr a week minimum wage janitorial job living in a condemned building? Or sticking up the local liquor store? Sure, some people commit crimes because of the funsees, but many are "forced" in to it for one reason or another whether actual or they felt like they were. I've had a nice conversation with a psychologist the other day and pedophiles are actually sick people she treats two. There are quite a few out there but most can control themselves and be satisfied with imagination or artistic drawings of what they carve.

Apologise, primal urge fucking speaking, opinion, obvious

I'm split here. Part of me thinks 6 months is a lifetime too short but the other part resonates with the argument said professional presented me.

I think it should be carefully examined case by case and since I don't have all the details of this specific case I will abstain from yelling "this guy should spend life in jail! If one thinks about it, the likelihood of pedophilia being a sexual orientation is exceptionally high. Take away the child ct of it which has a huge emotional component and it's no different than being gay, straight, bisexual, etc. in both behavior and responses.

I always get down-voted for that idea, but objectively, it fully complies with both psychological and behavioral definitions of a sexual orientation. I should point out that even if it's a sexual orientation, that doesn't mean it should be condoned or made legal.

There are excellent reasons to keep it illegal. But that doesn't mean it wasn't once considered perfectly normal. One of the things not commonly mentioned about ancient Egypt was that both incest and pedophilia were probably very common, and socially approved. Religions usually reflect social values, and theirs was an incestuous pantheon. There's also archeological evidence to support the possibility in the form of hieroglyphs that are NOT commonly published or often released for academic study.

Like most things, what is socially acceptable has varied - widely - depending on what the society decides is acceptable behavior. Once upon a time, not so long ago, children as young as 9 or 10 were married off usually girls often to much older adults - and this was in Europe. Even in America, it wasn't uncommon for older men to marry "under-aged" girls.

One of my great, greats married a gal who was fifteen, and he was like They stayed happily married their whole lives, since society wasn't demonizing either of them at the time. So social convention plays a huge role in the perception of what is "right or wrong" and the impact of "harm" on those involved. The way things are now, it's exceptionally unlikely that such a marriage would be able to take place, and social reactions to it if it did happen would likely make their lives a living hell at least until they were older.

That illustrates my point about how society can victimize the "victim" as much as the perpetrator when individual behaviors don't comply with social conventions. It's often a minefield of nuance, socially manifested and behaviorally driven, but we should learn what it's all about.

You need not look far for people who get off on videos of people being murdered and gruesomely dismembered, adult women being raped, children (with their clothes on) being beaten, tortured, and And when you feel really fucking hot, you want to see if you can make other people feel hot, too. because they've always had that primal urge. While there are clear-cut cases of abuse and demonstrable harm that should rightfully be rigorously punished, some cases are less clear cut such as a potentially successful and happy marriage between a 15 and a 27 year ol which today are dealt with in the same draconian fashion.

The better we understand all of the things involved, the better we can learn to deal with it.

Will know, primal urge fucking apologise

Clearly, the way we do it now has no impact on it at all. I second your thought that it's merely an orientation, that does seem to be the prevailing view from psychology. That said, in this day and age, we know how children can be harmed and should absolutely keep protecting them.

I read a piece in my country Canada about accountability groups. A bit like groups for alcoholics, pedophiles meet with volunteers and each other, and are supported and kept accountable.

apologise, but

I think the healthy way to look at it is, these are humans too. I can't imagine how difficult it would be to be attracted to kids. In the case of someone like this, sure, the 6 months in prison will happen because a crime was committed, but what's more important is what happens afterwards to prevent it from reoccurring.

Quote: Not a big fan of pedophiles but this does seem like the kind of person who needs psychiatric help rather than prison. You must not have children. In fact, you can tell from the lenient passing of judgment on this pedophile, half the posters in this forum either don't care about or don't have children of their own. Nothing says lenient like 6 months more like 3 in jail for a pedophile.

To catch suspected pedophiles they should be allowed to do whatever is necessary. stevewilson wrote: I'm never going to be OK with the government getting into the child porn business and serving it up to untold thousands so in the end they can get a couple hundred plea deals. There has to be a better way than doing the exact same criminal activity you are trying to prevent. I'd be interested to see how much child porn the government handed out during those two weeks vs total prosecutions. I think the even more horrific part of this "investigation" is that the FBI began the process by disabling the upload feature. This means that the ONLY people they caught were downloaders, while they purposefully ignored the actual producers of child pornography.

While I also don't agree with the FBI becoming the world's largest distributor of child porn for ANY length of time, they had a chance to make a difference, and blew it.

azazel wrote: I think the focus should be to figure out why a person committed a crime and try to solve that underlying issue, not punishment. How does focusing on the underlying issue fix anything? Once you've determined that someone steals because he is poor and has had a rough life, how does that improve the situation?

When police set up drug buys, the drugs are stopped and everyone is arrested. Running a CP server is not like this, it's a major crime, moreso than the mere possession that they were arresting people for. There are some crimes the FBI should be allowed to commit, but crimes involving the sexual abuse of children are egregiously over the line and should never be allowed. People are trying to say it's a needed undercover crime like selling drugs when it's actually like an officer infiltrating a group of hitmen by killing people themselves- a crime too serious to allow police to commit in the name of stopping it.

I don't give a rat's ass about people that download child porn. I care about the people who produce it. How many of them did this operation catch?

Part of the standard Federal sex offender probation which this guy got is a requirement to enroll in psychiatric treatment for the entire length of one's probation. In this case, it's 10 years, which will hopefully start in a halfway house.

very good

Frankly, a six-month imprisonment and 10 year probation is probably better than a four-year imprisonment with no follow-up. swiftouch wrote: Nothing says lenient like 6 months more like 3 in jail for a pedophile. Federal prison hasn't had early release in decades, at least not without an Executive clemency order. html See that's the real issue. The problem is that in order to produce child pornography you have to abuse a child. If you're downloading child porn without paying for it either with money or by viewing ads you are not giving the producers of any profit and hence not contributing to the abuse of children, therefore targeting downloaders is a waste of resources.

This just seems like something flashy and easy for law enforcement to do to show they're fighting something terrible without actually stopping or reducing the abuse of children in any way. Consuming child pornography creates demand for it and the abuse that accompanies it.

interesting. Prompt

I am always leery of this type of attitude. I tend to think it does more harm than good Every other crime a person takes their punishment and they get to move on, albeit sort of but with being on a list and the list is public. You might as well just put the guy in prison for ever, it would most likely be a better place.

I'm not condoning what he did. However if you look at he was charged with 1 count of having it I believe he and everyone else would be better served with a little help or treatment.

That show To Catch a Predator always rubbed me the wrong way The people making CP are child abusers first and pornographers second. Nobody is going out and sexually abusing a child just for the anonymous high fives of other pedophiles. At best, it encourages someone already committing sex abuse to record it. Another thing this is Ars, people here ought to be familiar with the depravity on the internet.

You need not look far for people who get off on videos of people being murdered and gruesomely dismembered, adult women being raped, children with their clothes on being beaten, tortured, and killed. It's not a hypothetical, it's real, there are plenty of people into that.

think, that you

Yet videos of all that are perfectly legal to possess. Why aren't people claiming those videos encourage those heinous acts and thus possession of them should be banned? Then you run into countervailing considerations. Some evidence suggests the balance may tilt in favor of CP being an outlet for these peoples urges, making the net result being less children are actually abused. Law enforcement budgets and resources, even for a crime as terrible as sex abuse, are finite.

The Primal Instinct. June 11, Not all organisms need sex to multiply, however. Bacteria, for instance, survive just fine by dividing into two genetically identical churchinnorthgower.comted Reading Time: 2 mins

Every minute and dollar spent pursuing a pedophile for simply looking at images is a minute and dollar that could instead be spent on the much tougher task of pursuing those physically abusing children. I'd contend that on the balance, a world where pedophiles could use existing CP to quell their urge to actually harm a child, and all law enforcement resources could used instead to track down and arrest IRL child abusers, would be a world where fewer children were actually sexually abused.

Thanks! apologise, but

And shouldn't that be the more important goal? Not to mention the massive loophole that can be and is abused, where anyone can get anyone else sent to prison for years just by copying a couple files to their computer Reaperman2 wrote: stevewilson wrote: I'm never going to be OK with the government getting into the child porn business and serving it up to untold thousands so in the end they can get a couple hundred plea deals.

Them disabling uploads which only would even effect things hosted there, and not links wasn't mentioned anywhere, whereas the criticism that they allowed new material to circulate has come up in many articles. Disabling uploads would be no different than replacing the site logo with a giant "PWNED BY FBI" banner anyway. What the actual fuck? So basically if I'm depraved enough that I want a career in killing people I can get a slap on the wrist for being a pedo too?

I'm actively looking forward to the downfall of my country. Quote: "And still, there is no indication at this point that he has truly accepted responsibility for his crime or began the hard work necessary to confront and control his impulses.

The problem I have with a lot of stories of pedophiles used loosely here to refer to "under age of consent" attractions of which pedophilia is a subset who aren't actually assaulting any one is How do they do just that? How do they confront the issue and get help? If you come out to anyone, reveal your problem to anyone, any time, and you're basically throwing your whole life in the trash.

Doesn't matter you're an Iraq vet and getting off with a relatively light six months, after that then what? Sex offender registry, child porn past, your life is fucked. Society treats all pedophiles with equal revulsion whether they're just fapping to a picture or physically hurting an actual person.

The only choices are take it to their grave or take it to prison where they'll probably get shanked anyway. Given this of course they don't just hide it but go to great lengths to hide it.

believe, that always

Whether or not they themselves believe it's wrong they know the rest of society does, but society also doesn't give them any viable alternative. What exactly do we expect?
